This paper sets out the economic case for improving language skills in the Scottish workforce. It considers the impact of the current view amongst businesses and the general population that 'English is enough' because of its perceived strength as an international language of business. The paper focuses on the role of language in international trading and suggests there is a need for more languages and intercultural skills. The conclusion is that the acquisition of language skills in the workforce is increasingly relevant, as the Scottish economy has to operate in a global market.
